Located along the French River, Convergence is a mental health and addiction clinic focusing on providing treatment within a beautiful natural setting. Accessible only by boat, the centre is a retreat for those in search of tranquility and re-connection with their inner selves. The centre aids in the rehabilitation of mental and physical health issues through the exploration of biophilia, consisting of exposure to generous sources of natural light and strong connections with the physical landscape surrounding the facility.
A commonly expressed concern in the design of many health centres today is the institutional feeling and lack of independence experienced by patients. In an effort to break down the institutional feeling that can exist in long corridors, the main communal gathering places in this design have been located centrally between residential wings. Also, in each wing, a split in the building form has been created to allow for the inclusion of vegetation and natural elements into the building, such that it allows for a year-round appreciation of, and connection to the surrounding environment.
